Sequential Figure and Ground
In the Sequential Figure and Ground project, the goal was to use letters and numbers to create a design that plays with what is the figure and ground. The canvas was a line of 10 5”x5” squares, one for each letter and number combination. I started by creating a pattern with my square colors, one black, then two white, then two black, etc. I focused on how my two characters could fit together in the square, and that involved not being picky about which was the figure and ground. I did not try to make my design legible, instead leaned into the abstract shapes I could find in the figures. I also paid attention to how both characters flowed from the previous square so neither was “floating” in the design.
Original
I focused on fixing the squares that I struggled with the most: P3, P8, H9, and Y10. I worked on making them fit with the flow more. I adjusted in P3 and P8 which character was black and white. And I worked on orientation with H9 and Y10.
